Emotional Competence and Academic Development Indicators

Abstract

The metrics by which academic development has been gauged in the past are for the most part narrow and cognitive in their focus, a way of separating intellectual output from the learner’s affective make up. Yet with the advent of neuro-educational frameworks it is now held that emotional competence is the very neurobiological wellspring of any advanced academic progress. By this we mean an integrated ability to manage stress, regulate one’s impulses, and be self-aware and empathetic in perspective. In this paper we put forward an empirical study of some rigour to look at the structural ties between such multi-dimensional emotional profiles and the hallmarks of academic development: cognitive flexibility, resilience in the classroom, productivity and the efficacy of problem-solving.

It is the view of this research that global policymakers would do well to heed an urgent call: if institutions are to produce high-performing and resilient cohorts, there must be a formal place for emotional competence scaffolding in the curriculum. In synthesizing emotional mastery with intellectual growth, we offer a blueprint for educational excellence that is mathematically sound.
