Academic persistence is widely recognized as a crucial determinant of success in higher education, particularly within increasingly self-directed and digitally mediated learning environments. As students are required to take greater responsibility for their learning, the ability to sustain engagement despite academic challenges has become more significant than ever. This study examines the role of self-regulation strategies in strengthening students’ capacity to maintain motivation, manage academic demands, and achieve their educational goals effectively.
Self-regulation is conceptualized as a multidimensional process involving cognitive, behavioral, and emotional control that enables learners to plan, monitor, and evaluate their academic activities. Adopting a qualitative descriptive research design, this study employs thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns in students’ learning behaviors. The findings highlight that strategies such as goal setting, effective time management, self-monitoring, and emotional regulation play a substantial role in fostering consistent academic engagement and resilience.
The results further indicate that the absence of structured learning practices and inadequate emotional control often contributes to disengagement, reduced performance, and increased risk of dropout. These insights underscore the importance of integrating self-regulation training within higher education systems to enhance student persistence and long-term academic success. Strengthening these skills can support learners in navigating complex educational environments while promoting sustained academic achievement.
