Emerging adulthood, commonly recognized as the developmental period between 18 and 29 years of age, represents a critical stage in which individuals experience profound psychological, emotional, and social change. During these years, young adults encounter important life transitions related to higher education, career planning, financial independence, and interpersonal relationships. Successfully navigating these experiences requires a strong capacity for self-awareness, emotional understanding, and reflective thinking. Consequently, self-awareness has emerged as a key psychological construct that supports healthy identity formation, adaptive decision-making, and overall personal development throughout this unique phase of life.
The present study investigates the relationship between self-awareness and psychological growth among emerging adults using a qualitative descriptive research design. The study is based on a comprehensive synthesis of peer-reviewed literature published between 2016 and 2026, encompassing research in developmental psychology, emotional intelligence, resilience, identity development, and psychological well-being. A thematic analysis approach was employed to identify recurring concepts and establish meaningful connections among existing theoretical and empirical findings.
The findings suggest that self-awareness serves as a fundamental catalyst for psychological growth by strengthening emotional regulation, encouraging reflective decision-making, and promoting a coherent sense of identity. Emerging adults who demonstrate higher levels of self-awareness are better equipped to manage stress, develop healthy interpersonal relationships, overcome developmental challenges, and pursue meaningful personal goals. The review further indicates that reflective learning, mindfulness practices, and supportive educational and social environments significantly enhance psychological development. The study concludes that universities, mental health professionals, and policymakers should implement evidence-based interventions that encourage self-awareness, emotional competence, and resilience.
