Abstract

Healthy aging has become one of the foremost public health priorities worldwide due to the rapid growth of the aging population and the increasing burden of chronic diseases. Rather than focusing solely on longevity, contemporary public health emphasizes maintaining physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being throughout the aging process. Healthy aging behaviors, including balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, preventive healthcare utilization, stress management, social participation, and avoidance of harmful lifestyle practices, significantly influence functional ability, independence, and quality of life among older adults. Consequently, promoting healthy aging through evidence-based public health interventions has become essential for reducing healthcare costs, preventing disability, and supporting sustainable population health. The present study examines healthy aging behaviors from a public health perspective by evaluating the major determinants influencing healthy aging, assessing the effectiveness of public health interventions, identifying barriers that limit healthy aging practices, and exploring future opportunities for strengthening healthy aging policies. A descriptive analytical approach was adopted through a comprehensive review and synthesis of recent peer-reviewed literature, international public health reports, and evidence-based policy documents. The findings indicate that healthy aging is strongly associated with regular physical activity, nutritious dietary practices, mental well-being, preventive healthcare, social engagement, and healthy lifestyle choices. Public health programs integrating community participation, digital health technologies, health education, and age-friendly healthcare services demonstrate greater effectiveness in promoting healthy aging than isolated interventions. However, socioeconomic inequalities, limited healthcare accessibility, social isolation, low health literacy, and unhealthy lifestyle behaviors continue to challenge healthy aging across many populations. The study concludes that strengthening preventive healthcare, promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors, improving community support systems, and integrating technological innovations into public health practice are essential for achieving healthy aging. The findings provide practical guidance for healthcare professionals, policymakers, researchers, and public health organizations seeking to develop sustainable strategies that improve functional independence, enhance quality of life, and support successful aging among older adults.
