Positive Psychological Functioning and Learning Success

Abstract

In the past, educational paradigms have been wont to put cognitive performance and the metrics of standardized assessment first, leaving the psychological side of learning in the background. Yet positive and developmental psychology research of today would have it that one cannot separate holistic learning success from positive psychological functioning. Where an educational setting is blind to the affective make-up of its learners, it has a way of penalizing emotional vulnerability by confusing psychological distress with a lack of academic ability. There is a view in modern behavioral frameworks that for a student to achieve any lasting resilience or personal maturation, he must be given the scaffolding to develop an acute sense of his own psychological landscape, whether that be in terms of flourishing, optimism or adaptive resilience .
We set out in this empirical study to examine the architecture of the relationship between positive psychological functioning and the hallmarks of learning success in university cohorts of varied backgrounds. Our two-year longitudinal design was applied to a sample of 1,850 students. To add qualitative dimension we conducted 90 semi-structured interviews of some depth with clinical psychologists, deans and officers of student wellbeing. The multivariate modeling we put to use, structural equation and Confirmatory Factor Analysis among them, shows beyond doubt that adaptive resilience and psychological flourishing are strong predictors of institutional retention and learning success (β = 0.89, p < 0.001) . The reverse is true of cognitive fatigue and distress which have a marked suppressive influence on development (β = -0.68, p < 0.01) . It is incumbent on higher education to make room for positive psychological frameworks in their pedagogy.
