Positive Mental Health and Student Development Processes

Abstract

It has been the custom of higher education to put first the hard numbers of cognitive performance and summative compliance, relegating emotional well-being to some administrative backwater or a matter of little consequence. Yet modern developmental psychology would have it that positive mental health is the bedrock of any student development worth sustaining; one cannot separate the two from emotional flourishing, resilience or self-actualization. Older pedagogies are wont to see burnout as an intellectual failing and punish emotional distress, but current frameworks hold otherwise: the systematic promotion of positive mental health is the essential scaffolding for lasting personal maturation.

Our empirical work here looks at the psychological dynamics and behavioral make-up of student development in a range of higher education cohorts. Over three academic years we have followed a multi-wave cohort of 1,950 university students with a mixed-methods longitudinal rigour. We also had 90 semi-structured dialogues with developmental psychologists, deans and directors of student wellbeing to add qualitative dimension. By means of advanced multivariate modeling (structural equation and Confirmatory Factor Analysis), we can put forward that emotional resilience and psychological flourishing are strong predictors of retention and development in the long term (β = 0.89, p < 0.001). The reverse is true of academic distress and its attendant exhaustion which have a pronounced suppressive effect on the trajectory of a student (β = -0.66, p < 0.01). It is an open and shut case that institutions should be making room for positive mental health programming within their core educational structures.
