In the prevailing higher education discourse, student involvement has for the most part been gauged by such surface level indicators as physical presence in class, the turning in of assignments and standardized test results. Yet modern developmental psychology would have it that authentic educational engagement is a much more nuanced and multidimensional affair, one propelled by intrinsic behavioral forces as opposed to the external coercion of an institution. The present study offers a rigorous empirical examination of the fundamental drivers behind the high levels of engagement seen in young adults who must make their way through complicated academic environments.
We employed a mixed-methods longitudinal approach to follow a multi-wave cohort of 1,500 undergraduates and postgraduates from a wide array of disciplines over the course of three years. To give greater depth to the quantitative data, we also held extensive qualitative discussions with some 80 developmental psychologists, deans and student engagement coordinators. Our instruments were designed to capture things like intrinsic curiosity, the resilience of autonomous goal setting and how often students hold each other to account.
The results are unambiguous. Through Confirmatory Factor Analysis and structural equation modeling, we have shown that an orientation toward autonomous goals and a natural curiosity are strong positive predictors of both conceptual mastery and sustained engagement (β = 0.88, p < 0.001). On the other hand, there is a marked suppressive effect on long-term engagement when institutions rely too heavily on passive lecturing or instill a punitive kind of grading anxiety (β = -0.65, p < 0.01). What follows is a clear case for pedagogical change: educational bodies would be well advised to put an end to structures of punitive compliance and build ecosystems where intrinsic behavior is actively fostered.
