Academic Self-Monitoring Behaviors and Educational Outcomes

Abstract

For much of its history, the contemporary educational framework has been content to measure student success by way of external, instructor-driven assessments and summative tests. In doing so, it has tended to miss the deeper influence of internal psychological self-regulation. Modern cognitive psychology would have us understand that lasting educational results are put in place by academic self-monitoring: the active process of tracking, evaluating and putting right one’s own learning. The present empirical study puts the multidimensional nature of such behavior under a microscope in both collegiate and graduate settings.

Over a three-year period we have followed a multi-wave cohort of 1,320 from a range of disciplines in a mixed-methods longitudinal design. To this quantitative data we have added qualitative insight from 60 educational psychologists, curriculum designers and other specialists in order to get at the institutional impediments to self-directed work. Our metrics were designed to measure error correction stamina, the precision of self-assessment and the speed with which cognitive milestones are met.

The numbers tell a clear story. Through structural equation modeling and Confirmatory Factor Analysis, we have shown that metacognitive awareness is a powerful predictor of long-term achievement (β = 0.84, p < 0.001). On the other hand, an unchecked executive disengagement and a passive dependence on outside grading has a marked detrimental effect on conceptual retention and overall outcomes (β = -0.59, p < 0.01). These findings argue for a change in pedagogical thinking; higher education must move on from rigid testing to create an environment where students are empowered to monitor their own progress.
