Personal Initiative and Behavioral Development in Higher Education

Abstract

For all that traditional higher education has made of passive knowledge acquisition and the kind of academic performance born of compliance, it has not given equal weight to self-directed autonomy. A different view is now gaining ground in educational psychology: one that sees personal initiative with its attendant proactivity, goal-directed persistence and self-starting nature as the essential catalyst for a student’s holistic development and any success he or she may have after leaving university. We put forward a systematic study of the way in which the cultivation of such initiative relates to the longitudinal behavioral development of undergraduates.

Our mixed-methods approach is rigorous; it makes use of both large-scale econometric tracking and qualitative pedagogical narratives. In quantitative terms we have a matrix built from a cross-sectional survey and behavioural assessment over several semesters of 850 students in a range of disciplines to measure psychological growth and the frequency of initiative. This was triangulated with the qualitative side of the equation: insights from 60 semi-structured interviews with career placement officers, deans and student mentors. The data were put through advanced statistical modelling, including confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), reliability testing and hierarchical multiple regression to test the predictive validity of personal initiative on behavioural milestones.

Thematic content analysis of the interview transcripts turned up some considerable institutional impediments to the development of initiative, in the form of passive norms in the classroom and an apprehension of failure among students. What the empirical results show is a strong correlation of a behavioural kind: in matters of self-efficacy and leadership emergence, the highly initiated student will score 74 per cent above his more passive counterpart. Hierarchical multiple regression bears out that proactive problem-solving is a major positive predictor of adaptability and development (β = 0.65, p < 0.001). On the other hand, the inertia of the institution and a learning environment devoid of active engagement have been found to have a powerful negative effect on a student’s propensity to be a self-starter (β = -0.49, p < 0.01). It is our conclusion that universities need to move on from the passive lecture and put in place pedagogical frameworks that foster initiative. With the right amount of structured autonomy and mentorship they can do much to prepare their students for the rigours of a career.
