It is the capacity of students to take charge of their cognition, motivation, emotions and learning strategies that makes self-regulated academic behaviour such a vital element in successful learning. Today’s educational settings see academic achievement determined as much by a student’s aptitude for setting goals, gauging progress and adapting to demands as by the quality of instruction provided. In the field of educational psychology, self-regulated learning (SRL) is of growing interest for what it reveals about how learners can be active agents in their development instead of mere recipients of information.
The present study looks at the link between these behaviours and learning achievement, with an eye to how performance is shaped by goal setting, metacognition, time management, the regulation of motivation and the use of various learning strategies. To gain a full picture of the behavioural underpinnings of academic success, we have employed a mixed-methods design. The quantitative side of the research is a survey of 850 undergraduates and postgraduates across a range of disciplines; this data is put through reliability testing, confirmatory factor analysis and hierarchical regression. We complement this with qualitative data from semi-structured interviews with 60 students, as well as academic advisors and psychologists, using thematic analysis to uncover patterns in how they regulate their learning and meet challenges.
From our work we put forward a Self-Regulated Academic Achievement Framework (SRAAF). This model posits that goal orientation, metacognitive and motivational control, and adaptive strategies are the principal drivers of achievement. Our results show that those with more pronounced self-regulated habits tend to have superior outcomes, displaying better focus and tenacity when faced with academic obstacles. Furthermore, robust statistical evidence confirms a significant positive correlation between self-regulation and learning achievement (β = 0.54, p < 0.001). The study thus underscores the value of interventions that build on traditional teaching to foster self-regulation.
In offering an integrated view of how behavioural processes affect achievement, this research has practical bearing for higher education and educational psychology. The framework should be of use to institutions and support services in formulating approaches that promote learner autonomy and resilience.c
