Self-Directed Learning Behaviors and Academic Independence Development: A Mixed-Methods Investigation

Abstract

Moving from secondary to advanced higher education is a structural change that demands nothing less than a paradigm shift; one must abandon passive pedagogical dependence in favour of active andragogical autonomy. Yet the conventional academic model is wont to make the assumption that university newcomers have an inborn aptitude for self-regulation, which in turn leads to a system-wide omission of any explicit instruction on the mechanics of being an independent scholar. Devoid of a proper framework for Self-Directed Learning (SDL), students are quick to be overwhelmed by cognitive overload and resort to study methods so inefficient they precipitate attrition and outright burnout. 
Educational psychologists have set about operationalizing structured SDL as a means of redressing this pedagogical shortfall. The contention of this developmental model is that one cannot have enduring academic success without having been taught to manage resources with rigour, to monitor one’s metacognition and to be intrinsically motivated. We put forward this mixed-methods study to see in empirical terms what effect the formal incorporation of SDL has on the academic independence and long-term cognitive resilience of undergraduates. Our quantitative work is underpinned by an 850-strong random sample of university students in Europe and North America, highly stratified and yielding an 88.5% response rate. We made sure to adhere to the reporting standards of DOAJ and COPE by employing multiple imputations by chained equations (MICE) to deal with missing variables in the dataset. 
The qualitative arm of the research involved 60 semi-structured interviews with those in academic retention; we used constructivist grounded theory to chart the resistance institutions put up to the teaching of self-regulation. A hierarchical regression analysis turned up a very strong correlation (Cohen’s d = 0.94, p < 0.001) in the data between early SDL and the ability to survive at the collegiate level, with resource management and metacognitive monitoring standing out as the principal statistical indicators of autonomous achievement. It is clear from the evidence that to put students through the door without some form of structural support for self-directed behaviour is an institutional risk that cannot be countenanced; cognitive autonomy has to be made a requirement of pedagogy and engineered as such.
