Social Media Usage and Its Effects on Adolescent Behavioral Patterns and Peer Relationships

Abstract

Social media has become a dominant influence in adolescents’ daily lives, shaping their behavioral patterns, communication styles, and peer relationships. While it offers opportunities for socialization, information exchange, and identity formation, excessive or inappropriate use can lead to negative behavioral outcomes, including cyberbullying, social anxiety, and reduced face-to-face interactions. This research investigates the impact of social media usage on adolescent behavior and peer dynamics through a mixed-method approach, combining literature review, a case study, and survey-based data analysis (Tables 1 and 2). Findings indicate that moderate, purposeful use of social media can enhance social skills and peer connections, whereas overuse or exposure to negative online content correlates with behavioral issues and social maladjustment. The study concludes with recommendations for parents, educators, and policymakers to promote responsible social media use and support healthy adolescent development
